GP2 race winner Alex Lynn has been wowed by his first taste of LMP1 power at Bahrain after testing the Toyota TS 040 HYBRID on Sunday.
The British racer, who currently sits fifth in the GP2 standings for DAMS, stayed on at the Bahrain International Circuit to share the cockpit with regular Toyota racer Mike Conway, and official rookie tester Sam Bird.
Lynn’s fastest lap of the day was 1m46.140, compared to Bird’s 1m45.840.
“When you’ve got over 1000bhp under your right boot it’s a bit special and it more than matched my expectations,” enthused Lynn.
“Just leaving the pit lane and knocking off the limiter almost gave me whiplash!
“We had a go in the simulator at Toyota in Cologne and then we got our handbook, which gives all the indications on the steering wheel, etc.
"It reminds me a lot of F1 in terms of the regeneration of the energy, very similar. So, I was sort of accustomed to the systems on the car in some respects.
"Every lap I am get more comfortable with car and I can see why the regular drivers love these LMP1 cars so much because they just keep on giving from a power point of view.
While Kamui Kobayashi is expected to be confirmed as Alex Wurz’s replacement at Toyota next season, Williams F1 development driver Lynn has not ruled out endurance racing appearances in the future.
“It is hard to say really, but these are fantastic machines and I love racing cars so for me I’m a racer and I like to race the best cars I can," he said.
"At the moment this is just a taster and I think I’m pretty set for what I am doing next year. But if I get an opportunity sometime in the future I would love to do FIA WEC and Le Mans.”
