Excerpts from the Proclamation
Whereas, Watkins Glen International is a prime example of New York State's many world-class sporting venues; its history, which is rich and steeped in tradition, dates back to 1948 when sports car drivers first raced around a 6.6 mile course through the Village of Watkins Glen; the official start and finish times of those contests were recorded, thereby chronicling one of the earliest chapters in the history of American road racing. (more) Whereas, the Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix is New York State's largest gathering of historic and vintage race cars and fans from across the United States, who come to experience the thrill and excitement of auto racing; the competition is a three-day festival of exhilarating motor sports competition that is a tremendous source of entertainment for spectators and is an important economic resource for the Finger Lakes Region. Whereas, it is a great pleasure to name the Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix's feature the New York Governor's Cup; on behalf of all New Yorkers, I commend those who work to promote a healthy spirit of competition and good sportsmanship in the world of auto racing. Now, Therefore, I George E. Pataki, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby designate The New York Governor's Cup, to be awarded to the winner of the Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix featured event.
