Legendary Driver Recognized for WGI and career Achievements

Watkins Glen, NY (September 12, 2010) -- The latest addition to the Watkins Glen International "Legends of The Glen" is the late Jimmy Clark. The former Formula 1 star had his legendary career honored Saturday at the Glenora Wine Cellars U.S. Vintage Grand Prix presented by Welliver McGuire. Clark joins Hurley Haywood in the class of 2010 and is the final inductee into the group this season.

Sally Swart, Jim Clark's long-time girlfriend accepted a hand-blown glass vase made by Vitrix Glass, of Corning, N.Y on behalf of the late racer. Her husband, Ed was competing at the track this weekend in a Lola T163. The couple now reside in Burbank, CA.

"I think he would have been totally amazed that nearly 50 years later he would be so well remembered and honored," said Swart after receiving the award on his behalf. "Watkins Glen was my first trip to America and Jimmy loved it here. I am honored to be here this weekend."

There are few drivers that are lucky to tame the twists and turns at "the Soul of American Road Racing" even once in their race career. Jim Clark found his way into victory lane three times during his legendary career, winning the 1962, 1966 and 1967 United States Grand Prix races at Watkins Glen for Lotus.

"I grew up a really big Jim Clark fan. To be here today to induct such a legendary driver into our legends program is truly an honor and a privilege. Jim was a great man and he is undoubtedly one of the greatest drivers of all time," said WGI track president Michael Printup.

"We would like to thank Watkins Glen for honoring Jim by inducting him to the "Legends of the Glen". He always received a warm welcome in the States and enjoyed racing at The Glen. We are sorry that none of the family could be there to receive this award but are very grateful to Sally for accepting it on our behalf. It is wonderful that Jim is still remembered and respected over 40 years on, a reflection on his great skill and humble personality. Wishing you many more years of happy motoring at Watkins Glen," said the Clark Family via a provided statement sent from Scotland.

Clark had two World Championships, twenty five Grand Prix victories, thirty three pole positions, was the winner of the 1965 Indianapolis 500, and three-time Tasman Champion. When you dig deeper and realize that two more World Championships slipped away in 1962 and 1964 through engine related failures at the final race, a clearer picture of his dominance emerges.
