Fourteen Years of Racing Tradition: Steamboat Springs Vintage Auto Race & Concours d'Elegance STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo., Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Racers start your engines for the 14th Annual Steamboat Springs Vintage Auto Race and Concours d'Elegance this Labor Day Weekend, August 29 - September 1. The excitement of auto racing comes alive on the streets of Steamboat Springs. Eight classes of vintage cars; pre-1968 production sports cars, sports racing cars and formula cars manufactured through 1972, compete on the twisting, winding 1.7-mile mountain road course in a thrilling display of drivers' skill. Spectators can view these beauties in the paddock area as they're being prepared for their race, and from a variety of outstanding vantage points. Advance discounted ticket packages can be purchased through August 22. Lodging and event packages are available starting as low as $118. Kid's 12 and under are as low as $31. The beauty and elegance of 100 domestic and foreign, classic and sports cars are also on display at the Concours d'Elegance on the courthouse lawn in downtown Steamboat Springs. These impeccably restored dream machines, some quite rare and priceless, are the envy of every car buff. This year, Steamboat honors the Corvette. The 1956 Corvette was the first to win racing status thanks to the engineering genius of Zora Arkus-Dunton. 44 Corvettes from 15 states will be competing, including some "sharks" ('68- '72) who are making their first appearance in Steamboat Springs. The Honorary Race Steward for the 1997 race is Fred Gamble, race car driver and Director of Racing for Goodyear International Corporation, 1963- 1967. Several other auto racing celebrities have attended in years past including Johnnie Rutherford, Augie Pabst and Bob Bondurant. Besides Corvette, other vintage race car favorites that spectators are sure to see include Bugatti, Mercedes 300 SL, AC Cobra, Cooper, Cunningham, Ferrari, Lotus, Maserati, Shelby Mustang and Porsche. Labor Day weekend includes the Auto Art exhibit at the Depot Art Center displaying works by nationally recognized automotive artists. There is also a free concert and street dance on Friday night and the Frank E. Leonard Scholarship Road Rally on Monday. Contact Steamboat Central Reservations, 1-800-922-2722.
