The Baxter Auto Parts Portland Historic Races: It's Not the Same Old Race

PORTLAND, Ore. - March 3, 2002 - The 26th annual Portland Historic Races is proud to welcome Baxter Auto Parts as the new title sponsor to the event: the race, henceforth called the Baxter Auto Parts Portland Historic Races, will take place July 12 through 14 at Portland International Raceway.

One of the leading auto parts and hi-performance suppliers in the Northwest, Baxter Auto Parts has been involved with the Portland Historic Races for the past five years in a smaller capacity. The company replaced Zupan's Markets as the title sponsor this year after the grocery chain opted not to renew its commitment for economic reasons.

"Zupan's Markets has been with us for nine years and has worked hard to elevate this event to its current level," explained Gill Campbell, event owner and promoter. "Although we are sorry that they needed to make this economic decision, we are thrilled that the baton is being passed to Baxter Auto Parts, which has also helped to build this event's quality reputation."

Baxter Auto Parts is a family retail chain rich with history. Ray and Wilma Baxter founded the company in 1936 in a building measuring only 15x30 feet in size. Today, the company has expanded to 12 store locations in the Pacific Northwest, with 10 of those in the Portland metropolitan area. The company is still owned and operated by 11 family members representing three generations of the Baxter family.

According to vice president John Baxter, the title sponsorship is a natural for the auto parts store. "We are excited about this new partnership with the Portland Historic Races. We have been involved with the event for the past five years and have watched it grow to be one of the premier events in the Northwest."

The Baxter Auto Parts Portland Historic Races features racing by some of the most celebrated vintage cars in history. More than 250 prestigious cars are divided into groups according their age and horsepower to compete on the raceway's 1.95-mile track.

This year, the vintage race will feature a field of racecars from the Can-Am Series, which began in 1966 and is considered to be the last great international unlimited sports racing series. With no upper limit on engine size and no minimum weight requirement, the cars of Can-Am were the most powerful and fastest racecars of their era.

The event offers something for the whole family, including a spectacular display of more than 700 collector cars and 200 of the finest collector hot rods in the Northwest; a family zone with go-karts, pro-pits, kids activities, and a variety of displays; a vendor midway; and the popular Food and Wine Pavilion, an all access VIP chalet.

Exclusive advance discount tickets are available at all Baxter Auto Parts locations. Admission to the event ranges from $10 to $40; children ages 12 and under are free.
