PORTLAND, Ore - May 13, 2002 - The Baxter Auto Parts Portland Historic Races comes to Portland International Raceway July 12 through 14, bringing with it high-speed racing by some of the most celebrated vintage cars in history.
Exotic cars such as Lolas, Titans, Austin Healys, Porsches, Saabs and more are divided into groups according their age and horsepower to compete on PIR's 1.967-mile track. The cars range in age from the 1930s to the 1970s.
This year's event highlights two featured groups: the first is a group of two-dozen historic stock cars presented by Marathon Coach Co., and includes Jeff Gordon's Dupont Rainbow Warrior car, Richard Petty's #43 STP car, and Ernie Irvan's #4 Kodak car. Many of the historic stock cars will be available for hot lap rides as a fundraiser for the Children's Cancer Association.
The second featured race group is a field of Can-Am racecars. The Can-Am Series, which began in 1966, is considered to be the last great international unlimited sports racing series where horsepower was ahead of aerodynamics and suspension know-how.
The event also presents a spectacular display of more than 700 collector and specialty cars and 200 of the finest collector hot rods in the Northwest. A family zone offers go-kart rides and children's activities, and a manufacturers midway displays and sells artwork, photography, books, racing paraphernalia and collectibles.
The Kuni BMW, Cadillac and Saab Food and Wine Pavilion presented by Fred Meyer offers spectators a first-class chalet at an affordable price. A $15 admission charge includes a souvenir wineglass and unlimited tastings of quality foods and regional wines. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Children's Cancer Association.
