HISTORY & A GOOD TIME FOR EVERYONE
LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY, Monterey, California (31 July) - The Monterey Historic Automobile Races are always entertaining for everyone, from avid motorsports enthusiasts to families interest in a fun outing and a glimpse of history. This year's 25th annual event, presented by the Chrysler Corporation on the weekend of August 14-16, won't be an exception. Indeed, it is shaping up to be the biggest and best one yet.
In addition to seven races on Saturday and seven on Sunday for historic race cars ranging from a 1914 Ford Racer to powerful Porsche prototype racers, there will be plenty of other things to see and do:
PORSCHE MUSEUM CARS Over 20 cars from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, brought over especially for the event, will be on display and a few will be driven on track during the Porsche Parade on Sunday, such as: 1922 Sascha, designed by Ferdinand Porsche; 1948 Porsche 356 #1, driven by Dr. Wolfgang Porsche; 1951 Porsche 356 Aluminum Coupe; 1954 Porsche 550 Panamerican Spyder, driven by Porsche AG Chairman Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking; 1960 Porsche 718 F2; 1962 Porsche 804 F1; 1964 Porsche 904 8-cylinder; 1970 Porsche 908/3; 1970 Porsche 917/K; 1977 Porsche 936; 1978 Porsche 935 Moby Dick; 1978 911 SC "Safari"; 1987 Porsche 962C; and a 1994 962 Dauer.
PORSCHE EXHIBITION LAPS On Saturday, several of the Porsche Museum cars and other historic Porsche race cars will be driven around the track at a brisker than parade pace by famous drivers including Bob Wollek, Derek Bell, George Follmer, Hans Herrman, Hurley Haywood, Jack McAfee, John Fitzpatrick and Walter Rohrl.
CHRYSLER CONCEPT CARS There will be a display of Chrysler's concept cars for tomorrow, some of which are sure to be seen on the roads before long if history repeats itself.
THE MICHELIN MAN A giant Michelin Man hot-air balloon, towering several stories into the sky, will be tethered in the infield area and be an amazing sight.
PORSCHE JUMBOTRON A jumbo-size screen television will be located near the scoring trilon where spectators will be able to watch a lot of exciting action, in addition to what they will be able to see on track.
FERRIS WHEEL There will be a carnival-type, 45-foot ferris wheel located near the lake for kids and the young of heart to ride.
MERRY-GO-ROUND Proceeds from rides on a merry-go-round with - what else? -- small cars will all go to the St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.
ART, BOOKS & MEMORABILIA Lining the infield will be rows of places with classic cars, colorful art work, photographs taken during races that are now historic, and motoring books about the past as well as a wide variety of souvenirs.
INTERNATIONAL FOODS Not only will the senses of sight and hearing be titillated, so will spectators' taste buds. There will be a broad spectrum of international foods and all of it is certain to be delicious.
