The Porsche Rennsport Reunion II will bring together an unprecedented gathering of significant Porsche vintage racecars owned by private collectors, Porsche Club racers, former Porsche factory drivers and a selection of historic cars from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
Other sports car legends joining Haywood include Dan Gurney, Brian Redman, Jacky Ickx, Vic Elford and Richard Attwood. Haywood, who co-drives the No. 59 Brumos Racing Daytona Prototype in the Rolex Sports Car Series with JC France, discusses the upcoming event.
TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS WEEKEND'S PORSCHE RENNSPORT REUNION II
"I'm really excited. This is probably going to be the biggest collection of Porsche race cars ever assembled in one place. It's going to be bigger than Porsche's 50th anniversary, which happened out in Laguna Seca. And when Porsche saw how big that was, they actually had to close the gates, they started to do these (reunions) on a regular basis like every three years. When we started talking about coming to Daytona, that really ignited a lot of interest. Daytona, from the history standpoint of Porsche, really goes back a long way. This is a perfect venue for Porsche to come to. At the last count, we have 600 cars entered and probably of those 600 cars, there's 150-180 significant historical Porsches here. People are going to get an enormous opportunity to come and see unbelievable history in one place."
THERE'S ALSO AN ALL-STAR LINEUP OF DRIVERS. TALK ABOUT THE MAJOR NAMES THAT ARE ALSO GOING TO BE IN ATTENDANCE.
"I think there are going to be 30 pro drivers, both past and present, that are going to be represented here. We're all going to be at an autograph session on Saturday to benefit Speediatrics for Betty Jane France. It's going to be a great opportunity for people to see great cars but also great drivers."
WHAT KIND OF CARS HAS BRUMOS RACING BROUGHT TO PORSCHE RENNSPORT REUNION?
"We've pretty much cleaned out our museum. We've brought everything that runs and has race tires. We've brought down here for an assembly of drivers. Bob (Snodgrass) has assigned each guy his own car. I'm lucky, the only car I get to drive this weekend is my 917 10. But I really can't complain, that's a pretty nice piece to drive. I think we've got 16 or 17 (Brumos) cars that will be driven in various races. That's pretty cool."
BRUMOS IS ALSO CURRENTLY COMPETING FOR VICTORIES IN THE ROLEX SPORTS CAR SERIES. HOW BIG OF A LOAD DID THIS EVENT PUT ON THE TEAM?
"It's a pretty big load. We've brought our Daytona Prototype down here so people can see it and touch it and it's over in the Grand American tent in the infield. People can come and get a close look at one of those cars. Right after this event is over, we're going to go back and start tearing my car apart and get ready for Mont-Tremblant, which is at the end of May. It's a huge operation to transport the number of cars and people we need down here to manage what we have down here. It's a pretty big deal."
