Nine-time Bathurst winner and Australian motorsport icon Peter Brock will line up at the VIP Petfoods Main Event at Eastern Creek Raceway from November 28 to 30, in another coup for the Sydney motor racing spectacular.
Brock has been engaged to drive a Holden Torana XU1 in the final round of the Biante Model Cars Historic Touring Car Series, which will act as a major support category to the V8 Supercar Championship Series round at the VIP Petfoods Main Event.
In 1972 Brock drove a Torana XU1 to win the 'Great Race' at Bathurst -- the first of his nine wins around the Mount Panorama circuit. A Torana XU1 was also the vehicle that took him to his maiden Australian Touring Car Championship title in 1974.
Brock's inclusion in the Historic Touring Cars adds to the stellar cast and dynamic program already in place for the VIP Petfoods Main Event. The headline act will be the showdown between Ford's Marcos Ambrose (Pirtek Racing) and Holden's Greg Murphy (K-Mart Racing) and Mark Skaife (Holden Racing Team) in the V8 Supercars to decide the 2003 series champion.
Eastern Creek Raceway also holds fond memories for Brock as the venue for his V8 Supercar win in a Commodore in 1994.
Brock said it will be a delight to take the wheel of a Torana XU1 at such an historic occasion for V8 Supercar Championship Series events.
"It is the car my son James built and got his CAMS licence with back in the late nineties. It is a real beast, and only needed to have the cobwebs brushed off for next weekend," said Brock.
"I got behind the wheel this week and will give it a good test at Calder Park next week before heading to Sydney.
"The Historic Touring Cars are moving ahead, and I'm looking forward to getting amongst it at Eastern Creek next weekend, especially at such a monumental event in Sydney."
The Biante Model Cars Historic Touring Car Series comprises six rounds in 2003 with the VIP Petfoods Main Event as the final round. There will be three races at Eastern Creek with race one on Friday at 4.15pm, race two on Saturday at 10.40am and race three on Sunday at 11.50am.
Brad Tilley currently leads the series with 202 points from Paul Stubber (69 Chev Camaro) on 153, Cameron Tilley (Ford XY GT) on 123, Chris Stillwell (69 Ford Mustang) on 111 and Drew Marget (Ford Mustang TransAm) on 104.
Despite a 49-point gap, second-placed Stubber has a slight glimmer of hope for series honours if he can win all three 20-point races at the VIP Petfoods Main Event. Series leader Tilley sold the Ford Mustang TransAm he has driven previously in the series and will now take the wheel of a 1964 Plymouth Barracuda, but is not expected to figure prominently at Eastern Creek.
