Words with Cam Waters: Nailing the set-up

The winter break is over, and Supercars action kicks off again this weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park. Our man on the grid Cam Waters says it’s nailing the set-up that will reap big rewards at the old Eastern Creek.

I’ve got a bit of experience at Sydney Motorsport Park. I raced Formula Ford there a couple of times, and I’ve done some ride days there in the Supercar as well.

It’s a fun track. It’s quick, reasonably flowing, and very technical. It’s the sort of track where you need to nail the setup, because you’re in the corners for so long. At other tracks you can wrestle the car and drive around a problem, but at Sydney Motorsport Park you just won’t get away with it.

That puts a lot of pressure on practice, because getting into the window will be very important.

Tyre degradation will be the other key factor. It’s a high-deg circuit, and it’ll be a great indicator as to whether we’ve made some gains in that area after our test last week.

We worked on a lot of things at the test day, and with the enduros around the corner one of those things was obviously tyre life. With Sydney having that high-deg, if the tyres hang on well this weekend we can be confident we’ve made some gains from the test.

It’ll be an interesting weekend to put what we learnt at Winton into practice and see what works.

Passing at a premium

It’s pretty difficult to overtake at Sydney Motorsport Park. but there are two major passing opportunities – Turn 2, and the hairpin after Corporate Hill.

They are both really good spots to make a pass stick, particularly if you’ve got a strong car. Hopefully we’re quick enough to be out in front and not have to pass anyone!

Good to be back

More than anything I’m just looking forward to getting back in the car and going racing again. The break was nice; we needed it as a team, and it was good to be able to go testing and try a few things that we weren’t sure about.

But to be going back to a race track, to actually race, is fantastic. I can’t wait to get back into it.
