Whincup first of the Queenslanders in Winton practice

Test track advantage proved to be a key factor in today's rain affected extended practice session at Victoria's Winton Motor Raceway, with the first nine places all filled by local teams.

TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup was the quickest of the northerners after a late tyre change moved him to within .8 of second of the fastest time.

Team mate Craig Lowndes never really got on top of the session, a number of setup and tyre changes never really giving the desired result.

With a session that started on slicks, went to wets then finished on slicks, TeamVodafone drivers and engineers were challenged with the changing conditions.

Predicting some serious data analysis this evening, Jamie Whincup acknowledged the team's disappointment.

"We were slightly caught out by the track conditions and failed to come to a good balance setup," said Whincup

"It looks like it will be a long night studying the data to come up with a good setup for qualifying."

"If there is a positive to come out of the session we were quite fast in the wet conditions," Whincup commented.

After circulating around the top ten for most of the second half of practice, Lowndes eventually finished 20th when others went out on fresher tyres.

"Our final result was a bit disappointing we were definitely hoping to finish the session further up the order," said Lowndes.

"We didn't have car balance to start with so we worked on that during the first session and the car was definitely at its best straight after the break."

"We decided to make more changes which resulted in a further imbalance that we never solved."

"I am confident that the engineers will find significant improvements for tomorrow's qualifying," he added.

The V8 Supercars will qualify at 12.00pm with the first of three 40-Lap races to start at 3.50pm.
