POSITIVE START FOR IRWIN RACING AT WINTON
IRWIN Racing has bounced back from the disappointment of the last two events to finish 10th in today's practice session at Winton Raceway.
IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison was running on a car set-up identical to his team-mate Shane Van Gisbergen. The strategy appears to have worked with all three Stone Brothers Racing Fords in the top 10 today.
Both Davison and his engineer David Stuart are happy with the performance of the IRWIN Falcon believing there is more speed and an even better set-up to be found in preparation for qualifying tomorrow.
What Irwin Racing's Alex Davison had to say:
"Today was difficult at the start because we had very few good tyres to run on, so for the first couple of practice sessions we were chasing our tails to a certain extent trying to work out which tyres were the best ones, how much of the problem was tyre based and how much was a chassis issue. Once we worked through all of this we made some changes to the car and it responded. We're not 100% there yet, but we've got something positive to work with. I think we've made some progress. We didn't probably get the most out of the green tyres at the end of the session. We only got one timed lap in where we really needed another because the tyres weren't quite up to temperature. Overall, how well we went is a little inconclusive at the end of the day. We've still got a bit of work to do, but overall it's been a positive start to the event."
What Irwin Racing Engineer David Stuart had to say:
"Today hasn't gone too badly. Our used tyres made the initial two sessions a bit frustrating. We're allowed to bring three sets of previously marked hard tyres and a set of previously marked soft tyres. Trouble is that to this point of the year we've had two soft tyre meetings and haven't had a lot of hard tyres to choose from so it takes awhile to make sure that you're not being misled by the tyre balance. Once we worked this out we made a couple of changes to the car and they appear to be positive changes. We had a run on a green set of soft tyres but the answers are not as conclusive as we would have liked. I think we're heading in the right direction. We need to have a good look at what we've done over the course of the day and what the other two cars have done, compare notes, look at what was positive and what was negative and from this make an educated change in preparation for qualifying tomorrow."
