Winterbottom takes Winton pole

FPR's Mark Winterbottom has snatched pole position at Winton Motor Raceway, and will start on the front row of today's 47-lap race alongside series rival Jamie Whincup.

In a qualifying that reflected the season-long battle between TeamVodafone and Ford Performance Racing, it was Winterbottom and Whincup who fought for pole position in the dying minutes of the session.

Whincup made a late charge but couldn't match Winterbottom's 1m23.1443 - the series leader falling short by just 0.15 seconds.

His teammate Craig Lowndes, who sits third in the championship fight, will start from 15th, alongside Winterbottom's teammate Will Davison in 16th.

Team BOC's Jason Bright will start in third, alongside SP Tools Racing's Shane van Gisbergen.

Friday's early pace-setter James Moffat starts fifth, with Lee Holdsworth, Fabian Coulthard, James Courtney, Rick Kelly and David Reynolds rounding out the top ten.

Race 27 of the championship will start at 4.05pm AEDST.
