JAPANESE turbo power beat American muscle in the first practice sessions today at Wakefield Park, near Goulburn, NSW, for round two of the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship.

Bob Hughes, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer RS Evolution V and drawing on experience of his local track, showed himself as the driver to beat with a lap time of 1:07.09 on the tight 2.2 km track.

With Graham Alexander second, turbocharged four-wheel drive Mitsubishis filled the first row of the provisional starting grid for the GT Performanc= e division - but it was the new Ford Mustang Cobra RA of touring car ace John Bowe that delivered a surprise.

Bowe finished third fastest in his American coupe, which he drove for the first time last Tuesday.

Holden rival Philip Polites, in a Commodore GTS, was only nine thousandths of a second behind in fourth spot, promising a battle between the two big V8s and the small Japanese cars in official qualifying tomorrow.

Bowe said: "It's a great opportunity for me to be the first in Australia to race the new Mustang and under the circumstances I=B9m pretty happy to be third and ahead of the Holden V8s."

In the GT Production division for family-style passenger cars, Sydney=B9s Scott Loadsman was fastest by more than half a second over rookie Alan Holgersson in a Toyota Camry. Nigel Williams topped the Four-cylinder Touring class in a Proton Satria GTi. <pre> RESULTS (practice):
