Nations Cup Promises Fast And Furious Action In First Visit To Wakefield Park
A BEVY of the world's greatest grand touring cars and an unfamiliar track promise spectacular racing when round two of the Megamantis.com Australian Nations Cup Championship is run next weekend at Wakefield Park circuit, near Goulburn, NSW.
The 2.2 km rural track is new territory for the Nations Cup Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghini and others, and for most of the drivers, and no-one is confidently predicting the winners of Sunday's three races.
On form, the favorites must include defending champion Jim Richards and his Porsche GT3.
Although he has not seen the track, the Melbourne-based New Zealander is renowned for his versatility, while the Porsche's nimble handling and superb brakes should suit the tight, 10-turn layout. Richards' skill is clearly at its peak after winning his fifth Targa Tasmania rally last week.
Championship leader Paul Stokell admits his bulky Lamborghini Diablo might be hard work. He will also be back aboard last season's SVR model, after his new $700,000 Diablo GTR was returned to Italy temporarily for some races.
"Wakefield Park is going to be hard on brakes and transmissions and, honestly, it won't be our best circuit. But it's important to keep gathering championship points, so I'll be in there doing my best," Stokell said.
Other strong runners should be the Porsches of Dominic Beninca, Peter Fitzgerald and Targa runner-up Tony Quinn, while Prancing Horse Ferrari team leader Mark Noske has an urgent task to earn points after scoring none in the opening round in Adelaide three weeks ago.
Series newcomers also will provide some highlights, with Mark Trenoweth due to debut a supercharged Jaguar XK8 coupe and Andrew Miedecke in a Chrysler Viper ACR. <pre> MEGUIARS DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP: 61 P.Stokell 55 Jim Richards 50 Dominic Beninca 45 Peter Fitzgerald 40 Tony Quinn 36 Jim Cornish.
