TeamVodafone press release
TeamVodafone bring V8 Supercar championship battle to Norton 360 Sandown Challenge
With TeamVodafone teammates Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes in the midst of a Championship battle, securing a good result at the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge this weekend is paramount for both drivers.
Whincup currently leads the V8 Supercar Championship Series by 194 points and is hoping to cement the title this weekend. On the other side of the garage, Lowndes is looking to reduce the points deficit and keep his title aspirations alive.
Both drivers have enjoyed success at the historic Melbourne racetrack, Whincup having finished top three in nine of the last 10 races at the venue (three wins, a second and five thirds).
A clean run would certainly make things easier.
“Sandown is a track I know very well as I grew up in Melbourne and raced there many times in my Formula Ford days," Whincup said. “I guess I could say it is one of my favourite tracks as I love its history.
“We are thrilled with our results from Tassie and I am hoping to replicate a similar performance this weekend.
“A clean run would certainly make things easier. But in saying that we need to make sure our heads are down and the focus is kept,” Whincup concluded.
Craig Lowndes is heading into Sandown confident he can bring home the necessary results, the car #888 pilot holds the highest number of race wins at the 3.1km circuit (eight in total).
“I am confident heading to Sandown, I have won a lot of races at the track so I’m hoping statistics are on my side and I can reduce the point’s gap to Jamie,” Lowndes said.
“I have to keep in mind that he (Jamie) also knows this track very well so I will need to be fully focused this weekend.
“At the end of the day, TeamVodafone are working hard to put two of the best cars out on track and I have to do my part for the team and try and perform to the best of my ability, which I certainly plan to do,” Lowndes added.
TeamVodafone is also preparing to wrap up the V8 Supercar Teams Championship, with only 23 points needed to secure the title for the second year in succession.
The V8 Supercars begin their on-track activities on Friday November 18 with practice. Saturday will include Qualifying and Race 25 of the V8 Supercar Championship Series.
Sunday will see the V8 Supercars return to the track for Qualifying ahead of Race 26 of the V8 Supercar Championship Series which will conclude the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge.
TeamVodafone’s live race day blog will run from the pit garage, coverage to kick off via the TeamVodafone website at 4.05pm (AEDST) on Saturday November 18 for Race 25 and from 3.35pm (AEDST) for Race 26 on Sunday November 20.
