Kurt 'Gonzo' Wimmer is well within the top ten after the opening session of practice for the Yokohama V8 Utes Series in Townsville aboard the Wilson Brothers Racing VE Holden Ute.

The number 32 ute dodged the carnage on the concrete lined street circuit to post the seventh fastest time in the 20 minute session.

In conjunction with the strong opening session, the team is proud to announce backing from several local Townsville companies for the event, including John Muller Tyres Plus Townsville, Gametraders Townsville, Cheapa Auto Spares, Simulator Raceway and the Digimen.

Wimmer has been most impressed with the facilities and the crowd numbers on the Friday practice day.

"The track is just awesome to drive around, really good fun," said Wimmer.

"There are heaps of people lining the both sides of the track the whole way around, the grandstands are packed.

"It is just like driving around the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit from a driver's stand point.

"The practice session today went pretty well, although we had a small problem with the brakes that has been fixed for qualifying tomorrow.

"The new engine we have on board for the weekend is humming along perfectly, you can really feel the difference in power.

"I think the weekend will be absolutely huge, and I'm very proud to have so many great Townsville companies for the event."

Wilson Brothers Racing's team principal Cam Wilson is pumped up for the weekend ahead.

"I'm quite impressed with how everything is going so far," said Wilson.

"Kurt is driving very well, and with a few more minor tweaks to the car it should be a challenger at the front this weekend."

The 20 minute qualifying session tomorrow will be followed by the first race telecast live prior to the Channel 7 coverage of the V8 Supercar racing, check your local guides for coverage details.
