PROCAR Champ Series (Rd 5), 12-14 July, Queensland Raceway
Bowe & Ferrari fastest on day one at Ipswich.
TOURING car ace John Bowe swapped his V8 Falcon for a V8 Ferrari today and set the fastest time on day one of the PROCAR Champ Series round at Queensland Raceway, Ipswich.
Bowe, who leads the pointscore in the 2002 Australian Nations Cup Championship, set a time of 1 minute 12.43 seconds on the 3.12 km track to be more than half a second ahead of defending champion Jim Richards, in a Porsche.
Bowe, Richards and the third-fastest driver Geoff Morgan (Chrysler Viper) will be among a field of some of the world's fastest sports cars contesting three races for round five of the Nations Cup on Sunday.
Times were close in the Australian GT Performance Championship, with defending champion and current points leader Brett Peters, in a Subaru, leading a pack of six drivers separated by less than 0.8 seconds.
In the V8 BRute Series, the gap between first and sixth was just one second, with the Gold Coast's Allan Grice setting fastest time in a Falcon.
Drivers in all categories will contest qualifying sessions tomorrow to determine starting positions for Sunday's 14-race programme.
