TeamVodafone duo praise Townsville track
After months of planning and building the V8 Supercars finally took to Townsville's 2.84 kilometre street circuit today for practice with reigning Champions TeamVodafone commending organisers and rating the new circuit as one of the best.
The duo, who have won the past seven V8 Supercar races held on street circuits used their practice time wisely, recognising the track change dramatically the more it gripped up.
Series leader Jamie Whincup was fourth fastest today with a time of 1.13.1557 and said he was happy with the start they had made.
"We didn't have the best practice tyres," said Whincup. "So if you take that into consideration I believe we are relatively quick.
"I really enjoyed the new circuit it is mix of a traditional street circuit like Indy and a parklands one like the Albert Park.
"I took a bit too long to come up to speed and find the limit but we got there and I can't wait to get back out there tomorrow for qualifying and our first race," he concluded.
Team-mate Craig Lowndes who finished 15th said his result was not a reflection of his cars true potential.
"The car is not quite balanced enough yet but we are comfortable with our base setup as we know that once the track grips iup t will come to us.
"Like Jamie, our practice tyres weren't the best and we didn't think it was viable going to a green set so early in the weekend.
"Today was about learning the track and being patient, we didn't want to spend the session chasing setup as the track changed," Lowndes explained.
The drivers will be back on track tomorrow for qualify at 10.30am ahead of Townsville's first ever 200km V8 Supercar race which will get underway at 3.05pm.
