PERKINS SAYS NEW STREET EVENT WILL BE AN EQUALISER
Half-Marathon the perfect warm up to Townsville heat
Dodo Racing Team driver Jack Perkins is excited about the challenge of a brand new street circuit ahead of the Dunlop Townsville 400 in far north Queensland this weekend.
Perkins says that racing at a new venue will be an equalizer, as all teams enter this weekend's two races with no previous experience or set-up information.
A fan of street circuits, Perkins is hoping to post his best finish for the 2009 season around the 2.9-kilometre circuit this weekend aboard the #11 Dodo Holden Commodore.
In the lead-up to this weekend's racing action, Perkins competed in a half-marathon event around inner city Melbourne two weeks ago, posting a personal best time of 1 hour 31 minutes and 53 seconds.
Perkins is aiming to break the one and a half hour barrier at his next attempt at the 21-kilometre half marathon.
WHAT JACK HAD TO SAY ...
Jack Perkins - #11 Dodo Holden Commodore
On running a half-marathon ...
"It's the second time I've done that distance and it was good. I've been training pretty hard for it and it was rewarding to set a PB (personal best) and to end up in the top 250 out of 3000 runners was quite rewarding.
"I was a bit sore for a couple of days after the run. I've got another run coming up in August and I'm hoping to go sub 1 hour 30 minutes for that one."
One the Dunlop Townsville 400 ...
"The Townsville race is a terrific equaliser for us as a new team. It brings everyone back to the same level. No one has any data or experience there. In terms of learning the track, we haven't done a heck of a lot because there is not a lot you can do until first practice.
"You could go up there a week before but you would only be seeing what we get to see the day before on our track walk anyway. We'll have a very good look around on Thursday and take a lot of notes. We've got four identical cars as part of the Kelly Racing operation and we will think about it and come up with some good ideas as a team after day one of practice.
"It's all about learning the track and seeing where we end up after the first day of practice, then work together as a team to get the best outcome for the rest of the weekend and the two races."
"From what we've all seen the track look awesome. They've done a really good job with the track and all the facilities and the track itself looks very good, similar to Albert Park in a way. So we're really looking forward to getting up there.
"I love street circuits and the Dodo Commodore goes well on street circuits as well. I'm hoping it's going to be a good event for the whole team and I'm looking forward to the best event for our car this year."
