Under a sometimes threatening sky, race one got underway, watched by an oncourse crowd of 67,600, a figure showing an increase of 2,000 on last years Sunday crowd. Jason Bright in Betta Electrical Team Brock, car 50, got the race away with a clean start from pole position.
Team Betta Electrical car 65, driven by Paul Radisich started in 31st place on the grid. Dean Canto, in Team Betta Electrical car 66, started in 14th place on the grid.
The race was fiercely fought from the start, Jason Bright, Mark Skaife and Marcus Ambrose fought a Battle Royale for the whole race, with places and fortunes changing constantly.
Paul Radisich showed true grit to fight his way through the field in car 65. By lap 34 of the 78 lap race, Paul Radisich had come up to 26th place. At this point, he had already made the compulsory two pit stops for tyres and fuel, unlike many of the rest of the field. Dean Canto, in car 66 was closely positioned to Paul Radisich at 24th place.
After an incident that saw Rodney Forbes spin off and have the pace car come out for a couple of laps, the race proper got underway again in lap 45. When the pace picked up again after the departure of the pace car.
Paul Radisich in Team Betta Electrical 65 was in 13th position and Dean Canto in Team Betta Electrical car 66 was in 17th place. Marcos Ambrose in Car 4 set a new track record in lap 56 of 1.23:47. By this stage of the race Marcos had firmly stamped his intentions for this race. Paul Radisich in Team Betta Electrical car 65 continued ton battle his way through the field to be in 11th position by lap 61. Dean Canto in Team Betta Electrical car 66 had also made his way through the field to be in 19th position.
A fierce battle continued between 9th,10th 11th and 12th places with Greg Murphy, Paul Radisich, Paul Weel and Paul Dumbrell all fighting for position for several laps.
Paul Radisich in Team Betta Electrical car 65 finished the race in 12th place after coming through the field from a starting position of 31st. Dean Canto finished the race in 20th position.
Both drivers are expecting to improve on these finishing positions for Race two which gets underway at 2.00pm tomorrow.
