Whincup reclaims championship lead with one round to go

With just one round remaining in the 2007 V8 Supercar Championship Series TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup has reclaimed the championship lead after an action packed penultimate round at Tasmania's Symmons Plains circuit.

Starting on the front row of the grid for this morning's Race 2, Whincup jumped to the lead after a sensational start and led championship rival Garth Tander to the compulsory pitstop. Another fantastic stop by the TeamVodafone pitcrew ensured he remained in the lead for the duration of the race.

A good start in Race 3 saw Jamie lead the race from start to finish with only one blemish at Turn 3, after the second safety car restart, saw him run wide and almost relinquish the lead.

Whilst Whincup was focusing on maintaining his lead his nemesis was forced to retire on Lap 40 of the race after an incident challenging for second spot.

Whincup's round win places him 7 points ahead of Tander with team mate Craig Lowndes 21 points behind in third.

"It is great to overcome the bad memories of both last years 14 second event and of a fortnight ago at Bahrain," Whincup said.

"I really want to dedicate this win to the team. The pitstop guys got me back out on the track in the lead every time."

"Leading the championship puts a lot of pressure on the team heading into the round but I am more than confident that both the team and myself have got what it takes to give it a red hot go -- perhaps a bit of luck would also be handy," he admitted.

Team mate Craig Lowndes enjoyed moderate success with strong finishes in both races today, sixth in Race 2 and fifth in Race 3, ensuring him a fifth overall placing for the weekend.

With 38 points from the round Craig has pulled away from Rick Kelly and is now part of a three-way title fight for the ultimate championship win.

"Race 2 was really a battle of brake attrition with the guys who were getting clear air able to advance better than those who were dicing for position. Unfortunately I was dicing quite regularly for position," Lowndes explained.

"Once again the boys did some great pitstops to ensure I remained competitive but this track is so difficult to overtake even though I had good race pace."

"It is with a sense of deja-vu' that the Team is going into the final championship round seven points ahead rather than seven points behind. Let's just hope we can achieve a better result than last year and we have a fair and equal fight," Lowndes commented.

The final round of the 2007 V8 Supercar Championship Series will be held at Victoria's Phillip Island International Circuit November 30-December 2.
