Modest qualifying sets the tone for TeamVodafone duo
TeamVodafone's Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup both failed to dramatically improve on their qualifying positions in this afternoons 42 lap race at Tasmania's Symmons Plains Raceway, finishing seventh and eighth respectively.
Lowndes was allocated starting position ten under the new 2009 rules, after he was excluded from participating in the top ten shootout for causing a red flag which resulted in prematurely ending the morning's qualifying session.
The Car #888 driver opted to run the soft compound tyre for the entire race but lost a number of positions when caught trying to exit his pit bay following the compulsory fuel stop.
"Our pitstop hurt us today," said Lowndes "The stop itself was quite good but I got held up trying to exit my pit bay with traffic in pitlane."
"The car speed on the soft tyres was not as quick as we thought it would be and I also suffered some brake problems which made it difficult to attack."
"We will definitely make some improvements tonight and look forward to tomorrow's qualifying," he added.
Teammate Jamie Whincup who started from eighth position subsequently finished in the same spot and never really challenged the leading contenders in a race that became a procession.
"I really don't know what happened out there today it was all quite confusing," Whincup admitted.
"The car was great and I felt like I drove some good laps but we didn't improve as much as I thought we would have once we went to the softer tyre."
"We have a lot of homework to do tonight and will look at a number of different strategy options for tomorrows longer race," he added
Qualifying for Race 8 will get underway at 10.35am with the 84 lap showdown to commence at 1.05pm.
