ORRCON BOYS MAKE PROGRESS
Orrcon Racing's Jason Bargwanna and Mark Winterbottom both made solid ground in the opening race of the Ferodo Triple Challenge at Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania today.
Bargwanna struggled in qualifying and started 28th in his Orrcon Falcon while Winterbottom started four places further towards the front.
Bargwanna drove a consistent race and managed to make up nine places to finish 19th.
Winterbottom had forged his way through to 17th, but flat-spotted a tyres and handed back four places over the final few laps.
The race was won by Garth Tander from pole sitter Steve Richards and Rick Kelly.
There will be two more 42-laps races tomorrow.
"We obviously missed the car speed in qualifying, but we made some solid progress in the race," said Bargwanna.
"We have set ourselves a goal of finishing in the top 12 this weekend, so that was a pretty good start.
"We actually managed to stay out of trouble and avoid the bit of carnage that was going on.
"To make up nine spots was pleasing and hopefully we can do the same tomorrow."
"Overall it was not too bad," said Winterbottom. "We battled a brake problem for most of the race and I actually flat-spotted a tyre while trying to get the bias right.
"I had gotten up to 17th, but lost a few spots over the last few laps because of the flat spot.
"If we can work those problems out overnight I think we can be competitive tomorrow and keep moving forward."
