FIFTH - IRWIN RACING'S BEST RACE OF THE YEAR
IRWIN Racing has had its best day of the 2010 V8 Supercar season so far, finishing today's first leg of the ArmorAll Gold Coast 600 in an impressive fifth place.
David Brabham started the race and drove superbly; he was one of the fastest of the international drivers.
Avoiding the first lap accident which retired several cars, Brabham steadily made his way through the field, handing the driving duties over to Alex Davison while sitting on the cusp of the top 10.
Alex Davison drove what many believe to be his best race of the season to date. It was a mature, measured drive in a car that continued to grow in strength and competitiveness as the race went on.
IRWIN Racing showed how good the car was with both Davison and Brabham pulling off several impressive over taking manoeuvres throughout the race, including a pass on TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup in the dying stages of the race.
While IRWIN Racing laps up the excitement of a top five result, its focus now turns to tomorrow's second race of the weekend.
With confidence sky high, it believes that today's result is no fluke and that it can repeat today's success.
The second leg of the ArmorAll Gold Coast 600 commences at 1.35pm tomorrow (2.35pm AEDST).
What IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison had to say:
"It is the best day of the year for IRWIN Racing, the result proves it. I've never been so happy to finish fifth before; it felt like I won the race when we got to the chequered flag. There was a lot of pressure in those last 10 laps, I got past Jamie (Whincup) but then I had to keep him behind me. The tyres had gone off so I was really fighting hard. David (Brabham) had a fantastic stint, he made up heaps of spots and his pace was really, really good. David manages to come on really strong when it matters, none of us could be more happy with his performance. I had a really good stint as well. The pace of the IRWIN Ford was really good. I got into a good rhythm and managed to pick off a few guys out on the track, which is always good fun, and had a good battle at the end. We had good pace compared to the guys that were around us. We've made a big step forward today; we had something that we could race with so it was good."
What IRWIN Racing's David Brabham had to say:
"All of a sudden there was mayhem ahead of me (on turn four of the opening lap), lucky I went around because I had plenty of time to stop, put the IRWIN Ford in reverse and get the hell out of there. I lost a lot of places, but once I got going the car's pace was good, it was getting stronger as the race went on and it was looking after the tyres. I had some great dices, I was really pleased. Then Alex did a fantastic job, his pace continued to get better and he felt right at home up the front which was great. I'm really pleased for the team to get on the podium with the nine car and fifth for us, that's a really good result. It was a good strong performance by the team; it gives us a lot of confidence going into tomorrow. I didn't feel comfortable in the practice sessions, I had to dig deep today, clear my head and just get on with the job. I knew once the race settled in that I'm always pretty strong in race situations. I got into a good rhythm and really enjoyed myself out there. We can improve the IRWIN Ford even more, but today's result gives everyone a big lift which helps us massively going into tomorrow."
What IRWIN Racing engineer David Stuart had to say:
"IRWIN Racing went from the outhouse to the penthouse in the race today. We only made a really small adjustment from qualifying to the race and as is the IRWIN Racing story this year, we qualified badly, but raced really well. Today we were really fortunate to work with two very good drivers (Alex Davison and David Brabham); both of them did an excellent job. David (Brabham) set the day up for us, he missed all the carnage on the opening laps and he was super quick. He gave Alex (Davison) the car in very good condition and Alex did a fantastic job to pass cars. We weren't just making up spots in pit stops, we passed cars. The SBR (Stone Brothers Racing) pit crew did an amazing job; we double stopped, like every other team, and picked up spots under a safety car. The guys did a fantastic job. Really as John MacIntyre (SBR car 9 co-driver) said on the podium, this result is for the team, IRWIN Racing and SBR. Everybody did their job and that's all we can ask, it's a great feeling."
