Premier Peter Beattie today announced that the V8 Supercars will share top billing with the Champ Cars at the Lexmark Indy 300 for at least the next three years.
Mr Beattie told today's launch of the 2003 Lexmark Indy 300 at Broadbeach that AVESCO and event organisers had agreed to include a round of the Supercar Championship Series for the next three years, with an option to extend by two years.
"I am excited about the popular V8 Supercars being a feature of the Lexmark Indy 300 for the next three years," said Mr Beattie.
"Last year we saw the first championship round of the V8 Supercars at Indy after a number of years as a non points-scoring race for the teams and drivers.
"The crowd loves watching the V8 Supercars, and the teams and drivers love racing on the Surfers Paradise street circuit.
AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane said this is a good outcome for the V8 Supercars' legion of fans in Queensland and throughout Australia.
"We are delighted to have reached an agreement for the V8 Supercars to share top billing with the Champ Cars at future Gold Coast Indy Events," said Mr Cochrane.
"In particular we would like to thank the Queensland Government and Sports Minister Terry Mackenroth for their assistance in making this a reality.
"There's no doubt V8 Supercars are the number one motor sport category in Australia and the series is regarded as the finest Touring Car Championship in the world."
The Gold Coast is arguably home for the V8 Supercar Championship Series with the AVESCO World Headquarters and 8 of the 21 V8 Supercar teams based in the region.
This year's Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge at the Lexmark Indy 300 is round 11 of the V8 Supercar Championship Series. The Lexmark Indy 300 is on from October 23 to 26.
