Mark Winterbottom makes it three from three
Stone Brothers Racing's Mark Winterbottom made it three outright wins from three starts when he collected honors in the Konica V8 Supercar Championship Series at Eastern Creek in Sydney today.
Winterbottom started from pole position in the 22-lap race after a third and a win in the opening two 12-lappers yesterday.
Unfortunately he "bogged down" at the start of today's race and slipped back to third place behind Matthew White and Tony Ricciardello off the line.
He managed to make up a spot a few laps later and then settled in for a fantastic fight with White to the chequered flag.
The 21 year-old actually backed off around lap 15 to give his tyres a bit of a rest so he could have another crack at White in the dying laps.
Unfortunately his cause was not helped by some lapped traffic with a couple of laps to go.
Despite finishing second, Winterbottom won the weekend outright with 186 points followed by White (170) and Owen Kelly (160).
The victory also extended his lead in the series to 54 points over White.
"Unfortunately I messed up the start again and made it hard for myself," said Winterbottom.
"I used up a lot of time and tyres getting around Tony (Ricciardello) and then chasing Matt (White).
"The bit of lapped traffic towards the end did not help, but I don't think I could have taken the lead any way.
"Matt did not make a mistake for the first 20 laps, so there was no reason he was going to give me a chance on the last couple.
"This has been a fantastic start to the season and I really owe a lot to SBR and our major sponsors Milligans Food Group, Bosch, Caltex Havoline and Pirtek."
The next round of the championship will be at Phillip Island in Victoria on July 5-6.
