The third round of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship was a dramatic affair. Held in the hottest conditions seen at a Shell round in many years, the circuit patches were always going to be tested, and ultimately they failed with rather large potholes forming in the surface towards the end of the day.

It was a weekend marred with spins and crashes, highlighted by Trevor Ashby's 200km/h plus shunt at the kink in Friday's practice. An ambulance had to be fetched for the unconscious Ashby, but he and the car recovered to be top privateer on race day. Up front, the boys from Dunlop were showing how it was done with Russell Ingall, Dick Johnson and Larry Perkins standing atop the podium at the end of the day.
