STRATEGIC HEADACHE FOR RICHARDS
STRATEGIC HEADACHE FOR RICHARDS Choice of tyre strategy was critical at Queensland Raceway today and Jason Richards seemed to have opted for a good one as he emerged in the top ten after the first round of pit stops.
The Team BOC ace pitted early and then pushed his soft rubber to the limit, making up time to leap-frog team-mate Jason Bright, Craig Lowndes, Todd Kelly and Fabian Coulthard. The plan rebounded on him in the last laps of the race, however, as his tyres faded and he conceded position to finish 13th.
The next V8 Supercar race will be at Winton Motor Raceway, Victoria in two weeks' time.
"The good thing about these tyres is that there are definite areas where you're faster than the other cars and vice versa. For example one of my stints I pushed really hard so I could get past Jason and a couple of others on the stops but because I used the tyres much harder they fell away and they were able to sneak back past me
"I'm not happy finishing 13th; it's not where we aspired to be and I thought by this time we would be much closer to the top five. The amazing thing is that both of the cars are quite different and we raced each other basically all weekend so it's obvious the solution is not between the two set-ups."
"Jason Richards decided to run short after the second safety car and Jason Bright ran long. I think that made quite a difference to their outcomes. They were pretty close on the track but I think JR probably stopped a fraction too early and Jason Bright a fraction too late. Jason Richards had all his pace after the stop and faded at the end, whereas Jason Bright was able to chase people down to the chequered flag. We've still got so much to learn about the soft tyre. We need to go away and assess the different strategies to decide what we're going to do at Winton."
