LAMBORGHINI driver Paul Stokell blitzed a field of exotic sports cars to claim his third pole position of the season in qualifying today for round four of the Megamantis.com Australian Nations Cup Championship at Queensland Raceway.
Stokell recorded a fastest lap of 1 minute 14.02 seconds, claiming his V12-engined Lamborghini Diablo coupe was ideally set up for the 3.1 km Ipswich circuit.
"The Lambo feels beautifully balanced here - it's very quick through the fast corners and carries a fair bit of speed down the back straight. In qualifying we just threw on a fresh set of tyres and went for it," Stokell said.
The three-time Australian Gold Star driving champion will share the front row for the first of tomorrow's three races with Geoff Morgan in another of the Nations Cup's most powerful cars, the V10 Chrysler Viper.
The Porsches and Ferraris in the field seemingly had no answer on the fast track layout.
Peter Fitzgerald, a race winner in round three in Canberra, qualified third-fastest but his Porsche GT3 was almost a second behind the Viper.
Stokell currently sits fourth in the championship standings, 161 points behind leader Jim Richards, who has a tally of 380 after three of eight rounds.
