PERKINS EXHILARATES QLD FIREBIRDS CAPTAIN PETA STEHEPNS WITH V8 RIDE IN QUEENSLAND
Dodo Racing Team V8 Supercar driver Jack Perkins has given Queensland Firebirds netball captain Peta Stephens the ride of her life at Queensland Raceway near Ipswich.
Stephens described the ride in the 640-horsepower #11 Dodo Holden Commodore as 'exhilarating' and was pleased to get an insight into V8 Supercar racing and the demands that drivers such as Perkins go through each and every race.
Perkins, son of Bathurst legend Larry Perkins, was happy to give Stephens a hot lap around the 3.12-kilometre circuit, where V8 Supercars reach speeds of around 250km/h.
In practice on Friday, Perkins was third fastest in the opening leg of practice, ending the day with the 22nd fastest time on combined results.
It was an encouraging sign for Perkins and the Dodo crew, who earlier in the day quickly fixed an engine problem when the car broke a rocker in practice.
DODO RACING TEAM QUOTEBOARD
Jack Perkins - #11 Dodo Holden Commodore:
"It was great to be able to give Peta a ride in our Dodo Commodore," said Jack Perkins.
"We are similar in that we are both athletes, Peta in netball and us as racing drivers. It's always good to really show other sportsman exactly what our sport is all about.
"It was great for me to show her how it's done and she showed me a netball trick or two as well, so it was great to give her a run in the Dodo Commodore.
"The Dodo crew did a really, really good job today. I'm really proud of the whole Dodo Racing Team. We were third in Part A of practice but we then had a little engine problem that could have wrecked our whole day and effected our weekend.
"The guys diagnosed the problem well, fixed the drama and got us out for the last part of the day.
"Our tyres were not brilliant today but the car was good and I think we are aiming to be in the top 15 and looking towards moving forward for Dodo and all of our sponsors."
Peta Stephens -- Queensland Firebirds Captain:
"It was exhilarating," said Peta Stephens.
"I've certainly never been that fast before but I loved every minute of it.
"I've got a lot of appreciation for how fit these guys have to be and how skilful they have to be at the speeds they're travelling.
"It's very hot in the cars and really the whole thing was just unbelievable."
