The battle for the 2007 V8 Supercar Championship title has intensified following today's opening race at Victoria's Phillip Island International Raceway with TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup now tied on points with championship rival Garth Tander. Whincup, who qualified third ahead of Tander for today's race also finished in third place after an uncharacteristically slow pitstop put him back out on track, in heavy traffic and a few positions down.

The TeamVodafone driver battled with Holden driver Todd Kelly for a number of laps before passing him at Turn 2, on Lap 24 of the race. A mistake by Jason Richards ensued allowing Whincup to take third place.

Whincup will start tomorrows opening race from the second row of the grid alongside teammate Craig Lowndes.

"It was great to salvage third out of today's race as we really didn't have the pace we thought we would," said Whincup.

"There was no particular part of the track that we struggled with, but the car it just didn't have a nice balance, we will study the information we have tonight and make some changes.

"I will be approaching tomorrow the same as usual and I am excited, it should be a great battle," Whincup added.

Teammate Craig Lowndes who started from sixth on the grid endured his own ups and downs in the race before finishing fourth.

"It wasn't the most ideal race but we are starting off the second row of the grid tomorrow," said Lowndes.

"I got an ok start but got caught up in the positioning at the first corner and Garth got around me. I also made a small mistake leaving the pits which cost me track position."

"Once we got past Todd (Kelly) we were able to show our pace but we will make few changes to setup tonight to ensure we are prepared for a good fight to the end tomorrow," Lowndes explained.

The 2007 V8 Supercar Championship Series will be decided over two races tomorrow with Race 2 to start at 11.25am and the final race of the season at 4.00pm.

TeamVodafone fans can also experience live action from within the TeamVodafone pit garage at final round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series with live and uninterrupted Garage Cam available to Vodafone customers with 3G handsets.
