Phillip Island, Round Six, Qualifying FITZY GRABS POLE AS CAM SUFFERS BRAKE SCARE

PORSCHE Peter Fitzgerald fought off a bout of pneumonia and points leader Jim Richards to grab pole position for both of tomorrow's GT Production Championship races at Phillip Island.

But fellow Porsche runner Cameron McConville (pictured right) escaped with a nasty fright after suffering brake dramas at MG corner.

"I arrived at the corner and the brake pedal went rock hard and just wouldn't pull the car up," McConville said.

"Luckily, there is a bit of run-off and I was able to pull on the hand-brake and spin the car off. It was the same as what Terry Bosnjak described what happened to him earlier this year but he had nowhere to go but into the concrete wall."

Fitzgerald has been struck down with with pneumonia after returning from a trip to the U.S.

Fortunately, the illness wasn't the only thing he returned with . . . a new batch of Penske shocks helping his Phillip Island cause.

"The car is really great with the new shock package because we have been able to dial out the understeer," Fitzgerald said.

"Falken also have provided us with a new tyre which has proved to be really strong."

Unfortunately, Class B has been struck down with Darren Palmer out after crashing his Subaru yesterday and John Bourke suffering major gearbox problems.

Chris Sexton headed Class C, just pipping team-mate John Cowley.

VETERAN Murray Carter dominated Class D at Phillip Island . . . the same track where he raced in Australia's first production car endurance race, the Amstrong 500 in 1960.

Carter grabbed both pole positions, with Chris Kousparis (Mazda 626) and Beric Lynton (BMW 323i) swapping positions for second place in each session.

Andrej Pavicevic (pictured right) again lead Class E over Ryan McLeod.
