PORSCHE driver Jim Richards kept up his championship-winning style to claim the first two races of the 2000 GT Production car racing season today at Phillip Island, Victoria.

Richards, the 1999 champion, took his new Porsche 911 GT3 to comfortable victories from pole position in two 12-lap races and will start from the number one grid position again tomorrow in the weekend's main race, the Century Batteries 1-Hour Showroom Shootout.

Second in both races was Mark Williamson, returning to production racing also in a new GT3 after winning the Bathurst 3-Hour Showroom Showdown last November.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V driver Rob Hughes was third in race one, while in race two the position went to Wayne Park's $350,000 Ferrari F360 Modena Challenge, destined to be one of the stars of the new Century Batteries GTP Nation's Cup series.

It was not a smooth debut for the Ferrari, which was unable to start the wet first race because it had no spare wheels for rain tyres. The car is so new it had arrived from Italy last week without any spare parts.

Park and Williamson both received stop-go penalties for jumping the start of race two and race one respectively, but it made little difference to the masterful Richards, who also picked up two wins in the Meguiars Top Marques Nation's Cup class.

"We've been working away at the Porsche since we went on track yesterday and I'm pleased with how it's going. However, it could all change in the one-hour race tomorrow - with a compulsory tyre change and with the Ferrari setting the fastest race lap today, the result is anyone's guess," Richards said.

Notable performers today included Olympian Grant Kenny, who claimed fifth in race one in a Subaru Impreza WRX, although he retired from race two with engine problems.
