BOC GASES AUSTRALIAN SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 3 PHILLIP ISLAND, VICTORIA: Qualifying Report, Saturday, May 16

RICHARDS WINS POLE - McLEAN ON FRONT ROW

Works Volvo driver Jim Richards coped best with cold conditions at Phillip Island today to win pole position for both races in tomorrow's third round of the BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship.

The five-times Bathurst 1000 champion earned the right to start race one over nine laps at the front of the grid when he emerged fastest in the opening qualifying session. Richards clocked 1-min 36.62-secs on the 4.5km circuit.

Queensland's Independents Cup leader Cameron McLean claimed a championship front-row starting position for the first time with the second quickest time of 1-min 37.06-secs in a Greenfield Mowers BMW 320. They were followed by joint championship leaders and Audi Sport Australia team-mates Brad Jones and Cameron McConville, who will start on row two in their A4 quattros.

In the second qualifying session Richards was again fastest with 1-min 36.72-secs, which was 0.10-secs slower than his time in the opening session. Jones improved his position to second and will start on the front-row. McConville and McLean share the second row for the 18-lap race, which will feature a compulsory pit-stop for all cars.

McConville spun in the second session, but did not damage his car. NSW's Mark Adderton qualified fifth for both races in his Attitude Clothing Honda Accord. Richards earned two championship points for his qualifying results and now has a tally of 40, while Jones and McConville remained on 54. DRIVER QUOTES:

JIM RICHARDS (Volvo Dealer Team S40): "We expected to be quick at this track, and the two championship points for the two pole positions could make a difference at the end of the season. I think we can win - we're ready to go!"

CAMERON McLEAN (Greenfield Mowers Racing BMW 320): "My aim was to put it on the front-row and we've done that for the first race. We lost a lot of dry-track time in the last few days because of rain so we tried some different shock settings in the second session - they didn't work and that's why we went slower than in the first session."

CAMERON McCONVILLE (Audi Sport Australia A4): "This Audis aren't particularly suited to this track, but Brad (Jones) and I will press on and get as many points as we can. I'm sure tyre durability will be our strength."
