Sirromet Wines Holden Commodore driver Paul Morris emerged third fastest in today's opening practice for Sunday's V8 Supercar Championship round at Queensland Raceway, despite a mishap in the closing stages of the session.
The 35-year-old clocked a best practice lap time of 1-mins 11.385-secs around the 3.1km circuit near Ipswich in his VY Commodore.
He finished 0.165-secs behind defending champion Mark Skaife, who was quickest in a Holden Racing Team Commodore, followed by Marcos Ambrose in a Pirtek Ford Falcon.
Morris, who tests his cars at Queensland Raceway, fitted a relatively new set of tyres near the end of the 90-mins session in a bid to claim quickest time, but his hopes ended when he drove off the track at Turn 3, a right-hand corner.
The Gold Coast driver is competing for the first time with the five-litre Holden Motorsport engine, after campaigning an 18-degree Chevrolet powerplant in previous rounds this year. Qualifying will be held tomorrow.
PAUL MORRIS QUOTES: "We knew we'd be quick after testing the new Holden Motorsport engine for the first time here last week. At the end of the session some better tyres went on the car to see what sort of a (lap) time we could do. The tyres had only done eight laps in Darwin. Unfortunately I went off the track on my first lap out so we never found out the car's potential. The new engine makes a big difference to our car. I'm hoping to stay in the top 10 for qualifying tomorrow and get a start up near the front of the grid. This is our test track so our preparation is pretty good. Everyone will go quicker as more rubber goes down on the track." <pre> RESULTS -- PRACTICE: POS DRIVERS CAR TIME 1. Mark Skaife Holden Racing Team Commodore 1:11.220 2.
