Morris narrowly misses top 10 on wet track.

Sirromet Wines Holden Commodore driver Paul Morris narrowly missed the top 10 in today's rain-affected opening practice session for Sunday's second round of the V8 Supercar Championship at Phillip Island in Victoria.

The 35-year-old from Queensland's Gold Coast emerged 11th fastest in the 90-mins session with a best lap of 1-min 52.653-secs around the 4.5km circuit in his VY Commodore.

He finished 3.560-secs behind the quickest driver, New Zealand's Greg Murphy, who clocked 1-min 49.093 in a Kmart Commodore. Championship leader Mark Skaife was 14th in a Holden Racing Team Commodore.

The conditions did not allow any of the 29 drivers who participated in the session with an opportunity to better the race lap record of 1-min 33.438-secs held by Craig Lowndes. The Phillip Island round on Sunday comprises a 300km race.

PAUL MORRIS QUOTES:

"It was pretty wet out there, although it started to dry towards the end of the session. This year we haven't had many chances to run the VY in these conditions so today was a good opportunity to try some wet-weather set-ups.

"We weren't out there trying to do fast lap times -- the aim was to see how the car performed with the changes we made to the settings. The only time we've raced in the wet this season was in the third non-championship race at the grand prix in Melbourne -- that day we were flying until I was hit and ended up in the wall. I believe we've got the car speed we need to be competitive in wet or dry weather on Sunday.

"If the weather is going to be fine on Sunday then I hope we get some dry track-time tomorrow because this is the first time we've raced the VY at Phillip Island and we want to make sure we've got a good set-up."
