Morris Struggles In Variable Weather At Albert Park

Sirromet Wines Holden Commodore driver Paul Morris struggled with variable weather conditions and a lack of experience with the new Dunlop control tyres in the Netspace V8 Supercar Showdown in Melbourne, which finished today.

The 34-year-old Gold Coast driver, who qualified 28th for the three V8 Supercar support races at the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, finished 21st in the opening race over 10 laps on Friday on a dry Albert Park track surface, and was 31st in the second event yesterday over 12 laps in damp weather.

In today's third race over 10 laps, which began on a wet, but drying track, Morris opted for slick tyres and was forced to retire because of bent steering arm, damaged after contact with other cars.

Morris, who had his first V8 Supercar championship round win in 2001 at Calder Park in Melbourne, said his performances at Albert Park had been affected because it was the first occasion he had raced with the Dunlop control tyres introduced to V8 Supercars this year.

He said the variable conditions had not allowed sufficient dry-weather track time for his team to establish suitable settings for his VX Commodore to secure optimum tyre performance.

Morris will test the Dunlop control tyres at Queensland Raceway in eight days in preparation for the championship opener, the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide from March 15-17.

Jason Bright won the opening two races at Albert Park in a Holden Racing Team Commodore, and Craig Lowndes claimed victory in the third event in a 00 Motorsport Ford Falcon.

PAUL MORRIS QUOTES: "This was our first time out on the new Dunlops so we came here hoping for good weather and a dry track to work on setting the car up to get the most out of the tyres. Unfortunately the weather kept changing and we weren't able to make the gains we wanted. We were way off the mark with our set-up and couldn't get the tyres to work. There wasn't enough front and rear grip so we struggled. We made some changes to the shocks, springs and rollbars, but there's a lot of improvements to be made. Another problem this weekend was starting way down the grid. I was bouncing off cars that were going everywhere. In the second race the steering arm was bent and I ran wide a few times. It happened again today and I had to stop. We've got a test day coming up before Adelaide so hopefully we can get the set-up working better for when the championship starts and there's points up for grabs."
