After strong pace in earlier practice sessions at the Clipsal 500, Lockwood Racing's Fabian Coulthard was left disappointed after qualifying for tomorrow's first race in 10th and race two in 16th.

With both qualifying sessions running back to back, Coulthard and the team had no time to rectify a mysterious lack of grip.

"The car felt different than it did in practice," Coulthard said.

"Earlier in the day the balance was good so we didn't change it for qualifying.

"Whether it was the increase in heat or UV or whatever, I don't know, but there was less grip.

"It certainly gives us more work to do tomorrow.

"It's easier to pass the cars in qualifying than in the race but we'll be right."

Race one starts at 16.20 ACST with race two commencing at 18.50.
