LOWNDES ROBBED AT ORAN PARK
Team Betta Electrical's Craig Lowndes was robbed of second place in Race one at Oran Park Raceway today through the imposition of a pit lane drive through penalty which was sanctioned by the stewards.
Team data clearly showed after the race that Lowndes had not broken the 40km speed limit at any time but despite the availability of proof, the stewards saw fit not to set the record straight post race. This miscarriage of justice denied Lowndes the clear opportunity for a round win.
After completing his drive through penalty Lowndes re-entered the race at the back of the field and was forced to fight his way back through and ultimately finished ninth.
In Race two after an excellent start and early pit stop, Lowndes became embroiled in a battle for third place with Greg Murphy. The two drivers tussled intently for thirty laps before Murphy hung on to take third position.
Lowndes finished fourth in Race two and sixth overall for the round with 159pts which elevates him to fourth in the championship with 1069points.
Lowndes said he was disappointed his first ever pit lane speeding infringement came from a mistake.
"I have never had a drive through penalty for speeding in my life so it came as a complete shock to be advised of the black flag," Lowndes said.
"I was even more disappointed when we went back and looked at the data after the race and it clearly showed we did not breach the 40km speed limit.
"In Race two I got another fantastic start and passed three cars before the first turn then the team decided to make an early pit stop to try and get some clean air.
"After the safety car the race turned into a procession and despite my best efforts I was unable to get passed Murph.
"We have made up two positions in the championship but in reality we could have more of a buffer on Todd Kelly who is only four points behind me," Lowndes added.
Team Betta Electrical will now prepare for the first of the endurance races the Betta Electrical Sandown 500 which will be held at Sandown Raceway September 9-11.
