FPR FALCON DRIVERS 7TH & 17TH IN OPENING ORAN PARK PRACTICE
August 17, 2007 - Sydney's second and final V8 Supercar round of the season started today with two hours of opening practice held in mild and overcast conditions.
Ford Performance Racing (FPR) drivers Steve Richards and Mark Winterbottom worked steadily throughout practice, Richards' heading the field and Winterbottom placed in the top ten at the completion of the first hour.
By the completion of practice, Richards' best lap time in the Castrol FPR Falcon of 1:09.3869s placed him 7th fastest, with Orrcon Ford Credit FPR Falcon driver Winterbottom suffering traction problems during the session. His best lap time of 1:09.6970s placed him 17th overall.
#6 Steve Richards - "The car feels pretty good, considering that I posted my fastest lap time in the middle of the session. Considering the fuel load that was in the car, I think we are somewhere near the pace. We made some positive changes throughout the session and I'm reasonably confident heading into qualifying tomorrow."
#5 Mark Winterbottom - ""It was a pretty frustrating day. We started well by posting some quick times on older tyres but then we changed to better tyres on towards the end and the car turned into a rally car for some reason. I think something has gone wrong with the set-up during the session and we'll need to search to find the solution. We ended the session without knowing the true potential of the car, so to move up the order tomorrow we need to look at all of the data and set-up to find the cause of the problem."
The early Oran Park pace was set by Holden drivers Rick Kelly (1:08.7303s) and Todd Kelly (1:08.7962s) with Lee Holdsworth rounding off the top three.
Today's V8 Supercar practice saw the top 18 drivers separated by less than one second. There were three red flag stoppages during the sessions without major incident.
FPR returns to Sydney's Oran Park Raceway tomorrow for Qualifying at 12:05pm and the first of three 46 lap races which is scheduled to start at 3:20pm.
