May 5, 2001 - 25 year old Canberra driver Dale Brede has qualified his NRC Racing VT Commodore V8 Supercar 4th for the first of three Konica Series races tomorrow (May 6) at Victoria's Winton Raceway.

In a frantic qualifying session held in fine conditions, the top Konica Series drivers matched the top lap times set by their Shell Series counterparts last season, displaying the outstanding technical improvements made by the top teams in this exciting driver development category.

Brede battled clutch problems for the entire day, but still improved from a 1:25.3 second lap in the first practice session to a 1.25.1 second lap in the second practice session. The NRC Racing V8 Supercar driver made the most from a steadily improved car to set a 1:24.2866 second lap, much faster than the Canberra driver had ever driven before at this 3km circuit with this car.

The scene is set for a three fantastic races tomorrow (May 6) at Winton, with young gun Paul Dumbrell taking his first pole position of the season in a VT Commodore, rookie Owen Kelly second in his VS Commodore and series leader Simon Wills (VT Commodore) third ahead of Brede, David Parsons (VT Commodore) and Leanne Ferrier (VT Commodore) driving the car that won the Winton Shell Series round last year in the hands of Jason Bargwanna.

Dale Brede - "We didn't get the most out of our first set of tyres during qualifying, so I pitted to change them and then concentrated on setting the fastest laps that I could with a clutch problem that continued throughout session. I know that we have excellent pace and a great car for the races tomorrow, so I am really looking forward to rectifying our clutch problems and racing hard. The car is handling better than ever so our chances at Winton are great."

Brede is joined for the first time this round by new sponsor Gulf Western with new signage appearing on the bonnet and sides of the NRC Racing V8 Supercar. Gulf Western joins Esanda Financial Services and National Capital Motors as major corporate sponsors of this exciting ex Formula Holden driver.
