March 18, 2001 - 25 year old NRC Racing V8 Supercar driver Dale Brede (ACT) performed strongly at the second Konica Series round at Sydney's Oran Park today.
The team and driver struggled with set up problems throughout practice and qualifying, starting from a lowly 10th on the grid in the first race and finishing 7th. This placed the Canberra driver fourth on the grid in the top ten reverse grid second race, where substantial set up improvements and Brede's skill landed the team a second place finish after leading the race until the mid stages. After a bad start in the third race, Brede finished 7th, wrapping up a tough but positive weekend for the rookie driver and team.
The NRC Racing V8 Supercar driver is now placed 6th overall in the Championship with four rounds remaining in the series.
Dale Brede - "We made so much progress today that the positives far outweigh the negatives - while it would have been great to be on the podium, I am pleased with the progress the team is making with every V8 Supercar event that we compete in. There's more to come from us, that's for sure."
Arthur Abrahams, Team Owner - "The weekend started very ordinarily and I am extremely pleased that the team and in particular Dale, always moved forward as the weekend progressed. Of particular importance was the advances that our driver made in his V8 Supercar racecraft and approach to our race strategies."
Konica V8 Supercar Series pointscore after Round 2 - 1. Simon Wills 436, 2. David Parsons 410, 3.Michael Simpson 394, 4.Paul Dumbrell 374, 5.Craig Harris 362, 6. Dale Brede 336.
Race One - 11:30am / 18 Laps / Fine 25C - Starting Position - 10th, Finished - 7th.
A fast start saw Brede up to 8th position by the end of the first lap, starting a race long battle with Falcon driver Gary Holt who was on the tail of Falcon driver Craig Harris (5th) and VS Commodore driver Mal Rose (6th). With three laps left in the race, Brede passed Holt in a bold move under the Oran Park bridge, remaining side by side with Holt through two corners before taking 7th position and sprinting on to greet the chequered flag. The race was won by Kiwi Simon Wills in a VT Commodore, with EL Falcon driver Michael Simpson second and VT Commodore driver Paul Dumbrell third.
Race Two - 1:30pm / 18 Laps / Starting Position - 4th (Top Ten Reverse Grid), Finished - 2nd.
A magnificent start saw the NRC Racing V8 Supercar driver blast into the lead from 4th on the grid, leading the 25 car field into the first corner ahead of Terry Wyhoon (VS Commodore) and David Parsons (VT Commodore). Set up changes made after race one proved their worth with Brede holding onto a strong lead for the opening three laps. Parsons made his way past Wyhoon into second position and chased Brede - catching him by the sixth lap. After several attempts, Parsons passed Brede on lap 9. The Canberra driver held on to second place, defending his position brilliantly against the late race advances of AU Falcon driver Craig Harris, greeting the chequered flag behind winner Parsons, with Harris, Owen Kelly (VS Commodore) Simpson and Wyhoon making up the top six.
Race Three - 3:30pm / 18 Laps / Fine - 27C - Starting Position - 2nd / Finished - 7th
Starting from the front row, Brede struggled with heavy wheelspin forcing him to drop to 4th by the first corner as Craig Harris led from David Parsons and Owen Kelly. Brede held position until the mid stages of the race when he battled with series leader Simon Wills, the two drivers running off the circuit briefly in the midst of their battle, dropping the NRC Racing driver to 9th, driving a determined race to make up two positions to 7th by the end of the third race. Parsons won the race (and the round) from Harris with Kelly third.
