Chaz Mostert will start today’s V8 Supercars race from pole position, after leading a Prodrive Racing Australia 1-2-3 in qualifying.
Mostert, the form qualifier in V8s at the moment, made the most of his second run on fresh rubber right at the end of the session, firing into P1 with a 1m12.866s.
That lap bumped Mostert’s team-mate Mark Winterbottom off top spot, ‘Frosty’ having become the first driver to dip into the 1m12s just seconds earlier. David Reynolds also joined the 1m12s party on his final run, making it a PRA 1-2-3.
“It’s fantastic,” said Mostert.
“All our cars are similar, we’ve been working hard together. Now we have to all get off the line and get away from the mess.”
Scott McLaughlin qualified fourth for Volvo, a remarkable turnaround after the Kiwi missed most of this morning’s warm-up and his crew had to fit a spare engine between sessions.
Scott Pye was next, the Penske driver having been fastest mid-way through the session after the first green tyre runs, while Jamie Whincup made his first appearance in the Top 10 with P6.
Whincup’s team-mate Craig Lowndes had a tough session, however, gambling on doing just one run right at the end of the session. In the end it was gamble that didn’t pay off, the title contender winding up just 14th fastest.
