SATCC Round 6 - Mallala 22-24 May Qualifying Report Saturday, 23/5/98 Skaife Grabs Pole with 9/100th's Separating Top 5 In one of the tightest qualifying V8 Sessions on record where only 9/100th's of a second separated the top five drivers, Mobil's Mark Skaife took pole for tomorrow's round six of the Shell V8 Supercar Series at Adelaide's 2.6km Mallala circuit. Mark Skaife Skaife set a 1m7.506s lap in his Commodore for his third pole of the season; with Shell's John Bowe just 2/1000th's behind Skaife (1m7.508s) — a deficit that equates to a mere 70mm length. Craig Lowndes was third (1m7.544s) with Young Gun Jason Bright continuing to show top form, qualifying fourth (1m7.55s) in the Pirtek Falcon. Series lead, Adelaide's Russell Ingall was knocked back to fifth (1m7.59s) in the Castrol Commodore—despite being only 9/100th's of a second or 3.1 metres slower that pole sitter, Skaife. Glenn Seton who had consistently led the time charts in practice, was sixth fastest with a 1m7.84s lap in his Ford Credit Falcon. Competition was so tough amongst the record 33 strong field that a mere second separated the top 14 V8's. The field will contest three, 17 lap races tomorrow, with Ingall battling on his home town circuit to extend his slender four point championship lead on arch rival Lowndes.
