Lowndes breaks Clipsal 500 Pole Voodoo

TeamVodafone's Craig Lowndes has secured his first ever pole position at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, setting the fastest lap time in today's Top Ten Shootout. Just under three tenths of a second separated him and teammate Jamie Whincup who will start tomorrow's gruelling 250km race from fifth on the grid.

Lowndes, who finished the final two practice sessions seventh and fourth respectively, was second quickest during the afternoon qualifying session. The #888 driver took a measured approach in order to conserve tyre life ahead of the Top Ten Shootout.

The second last driver to take to the track in the shootout, Lowndes posted the fastest lap of the day, a 1.21.2738 securing him a front row start for tomorrow’s opening race.

After finishing the earlier practice sessions second and seventh, defending Champion Jamie Whincup took a similar approach to qualifying and ended the session fourth.

Whincup then opted for a more aggressive set-up on the #1 Commodore, but didn’t quite get the desired pace.

The V8 Supercars will take to the 3.22km Adelaide street circuit for a 20 minute warm up session at 9.05am tomorrow ahead of the first race of the 2012 V8 Supercar Championship Series which will get underway at 2.35pm.
