Lowndes sets fastest first practice time at Albert Park

Holden teams fill top 7 in opening practice for the double-header non-points weekend at the Grand Prix of Australia.

Red Bull Racing Australia's Craig Lowndes has set the fastest time in the opening practice session of the MSS Security V8 Supercars Challenge at Albert Park in Melbourne.

Lowndes set a time of 1m 58.5837 seconds in the 30 minute session with Fujitsu Racing youngster Scott McLaughlin 0.2316 seconds behind.

Dean Fiore finished in third position in the Dodo Insurance Racing Commodore with a time of 1m 58.9362 seconds.

Jason Bright, Jamie Whincup rounded out the top five with Fabian Coulthard and Tony D'Alberto behind.

Mark Winterbottom was the first of the Fords in eighth place with Nissan's James Moffat in ninth and Shane van Gisbergen claiming tenth.

Erebus Motorsport V8's Lee Holdsworth's session was marred by smoke filling the cabin of his E63's cabin partway through the session and was the only driver to report troubles.

The V8 Supercars are back on track at 4:10 AEDT for a second 30 minute session ahead of qualifying at 6:30 this evening.
