Taking the 99th win of his career, Red Bull Racing's Craig Lowndes led the field from the drop of the green to the checkered for the second time today. Additionally, it was a 1-2 finish for Red Bull as Jamie Whincup completed the event in second.

Building upon the legacy

Lowndes, who started his 550th V8 Supercars race today, will be eager to get on track tomorrow for the 200km main event to go for his 100th race win and complete the weekend domination.

Battle for the top-five

Although he started in fourth, David Reynolds got the jump on HRT driver, James Courtney, and held onto third for quite some time. With 10 laps to go, Courtney made the move on Reynolds at Turn 4 and held on to the end to take home third. With the podium finish, Courtney still maintains the championship lead heading into tomorrow’s main event.

With Reynolds finishing where he started in fourth, there was a bit of action behind him as cars battled for fifth.

Super Black shows promise

It was a bit of an upset for newcomer to the main game, Andre Heimgartner of Super Black Racing, after starting inside the top-five. Early in the race, Heimgartner locked up the brakes and went off into the sand trap at the Turn 4 hairpin. This brought out the safety car which compressed the field again. Unfortunately for Heimgartner, he would finish the race in last.

With Heimgartner out of the picture, this allowed Courtney’s teammate, Garth Tander to move into the top-five where he stayed for the duration of the race.

Volvo back in the game

With elbow grease and hard work, the Volvo team managed to get Scott McLaughlin’s car repaired and back out onto the field for Race 5. Although McLaughlin still complained about a throttle issue, he was able to maintain his pace throughout the event.

Reflecting on race 1 controversy

The controversy between Will Davison and James Courtney bled over into Race 2 briefly as officials declared that the contact between the two was as a racing incident. Although Davison was adamant that Courtney hit him first before the latter was pushed by Chaz Mostert, that didn’t stop the Erebus driver from going in a rant.

“Maybe he was hit from behind; I reckon he’s hit me, and then he’s been hit from behind, because every time the guy’s near me he’s just got to drill me, he just cannot help himself [and] be smart and sensible,” said Davison.

“The arrogance on the bloke’s just pathetic. I feel sorry for him.”
