Fabian Coulthard and Lockwood Racing are keen to once again visit the podium when they hit the streets of Townsville this weekend for round seven of the V8 Supercar Championship.

Coulthard showed plenty of pace in the last round in Darwin, finishing third in race two and qualifying inside the top 10 all weekend.

"We should be OK (in Townsville)," he said.

"I think we improved the car a little bit for sure (in Darwin) and there's more improvements to come from the car. We should be right. Hopefully we'll hit the ground running and fine tune the car from the start."

While the Top End race weekend featured a mixture of soft and hard tyres, Townsville is run exclusively on hards. While the team found the hard tyres difficult to master in the early rounds, the Darwin podium was achieved with hards.

Lockwood Racing team owner Brad Jones understands the significance of the result.

"The positive (out of Darwin) is being competitive in the hard tyre races on Saturday, coming into Townsville that's really important. Even though the race durations are longer, it's all on hard tyres so we're pretty positive about where we are with the car in terms of speed," Jones said.

Coulthard finished third in race one last year in Townsville and enjoys the unique hybrid track.

"Townsville is a track that we've gone pretty well at in the past," he said.

"It's 85% parkland, so it's purpose built for us, the other bits being public roads, so it's got a good combination of both - permanent facility and street circuit. It's one of those events where it's not a big town so the place embraces it 100% and you see that with the crowd numbers."

Sitting comfortably in the top 5 in the Championship, Coulthard is intent on keeping things simple.

"We're just going round by round. It's a team sport, we all have to pull our weight and if we do, we'll get the results," Coulthard said.

Brad Jones says the team is keen to make amends after a tough Sunday 200km race at the Top End that cost Coulthard and the team valuable points.

"In hindsight, which is always a wonderful thing, we would've started Fabian on soft tyres (the team started on hards) and not been in the position where we go a lap down but it's not going to be an issue in Townsville because it's all on the hard tyre," he said.

"I'm looking forward to a really strong result and I know the guys are looking forward to bouncing back and I think we will," Jones said.

Round 7 of the V8 Supercar Championship starts on Friday with three practice sessions followed by two 125km races on Saturday and a 250km race on Sunday.
