'Incredible Start' For Coulthard
New beginnings have proved no hurdle for Lockwood Racing's Fabian Coulthard, who finished sixth at the Clipsal 500 today despite running a new team and car.
The Kiwi, who rarely fell outside the top ten for the 78-lap race, was pushed all the way for the excellent result but praised the car, which he says was strong enough to hold position on the notorious street track.
The result was beyond even Coulthard's own expectations so early on and he is now hoping to back it up in tomorrow's 250km race. Qualifying starts at 11:15.
"The car wasn't particularly strong but it was strong in areas that stopped us from being vulnerable to being passed, which gave me the breathing space when we needed it. It didn't have an outright lap time in it but consistency is the key in this game.
"I thought the learning process would have been a bit longer; at least a couple of rounds! But what we've achieved in the first race and qualifying has been above my expectations. Obviously that's the level the car's at and everything gelled straight away but I'm sure there will definitely be times in the future when we will have needed to know each other longer to make things work. Even so, it's an incredible start."
